Union Pacific says 'unmanned' train was staffed

ANDERSON COUNTY, TX (KLTV) -

An "unmanned" locomotive traveled from Palestine towards Jacksonville Sunday night.

Raquel Espinoza, a spokesperson for Union Pacific says the train was moving cars at the Palestine Yard when a mechanical issue occurred. Espinoza says at that time, an engineer was on board the locomotive. She added that in this incident, the train eventually stopped on its own.

Initially, the Sergeant on the scene from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department said there were two trains, both of which were unmanned. Now, officials have recanted that statement saying what the Union Pacific spokesperson released is true.

Officials say train was traveling at a low rate of speed, somewhere around 25 mph.

The train was stopped in Anderson County late Sunday night.

Some reports indicated railroad warning lights were not activating to warn of the oncoming train. Travelers were warned to use extreme caution when approaching railroad crossings.

No vehicle accidents related to the unmanned train were reported.
