JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Taste of Mississippi helps Stewpot become handicap accessible and make improvements to its aging building.
The biggest fundraiser of the year for Stewpot Ministries wrapped up Monday night at Highland Village.
Taste of Mississippi brought together more than 40 restaurants offering samplings of their culinary delights to raise money for the non-profit agency.
This is the event's 24th year.
Stewpot operates 17 programs which assist the homeless and hungry.
The organization is undertaking a $4 million dollar capital improvement plan to renovate their deteriorating main facility and make it handicap accessible.
"We've really got to get it handicap accessible. It's just not right for people in wheelchairs to have to sit outside and get their meals brought to them," said Stewpot Executive Director Rev. Frank Spencer.
"It's just a great, great charity to support. We've got so many people here in Jackson that we really need to help this way, and they do so many wonderful things," said Ridgeland resident Gail Gordin.
"It's so important to participate in order to help those who are in need and those who are less fortunate and be able to give back to the community," said Jackson resident Lou Ann Jackson.
WBLT's own Mike McDaniel was also on hand to judge some of the delicious dishes served up during the fundraiser.
Last year's event raised more than $100,000.00.
