AMITE COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Following some intense moments a pilot walked away safely from a helicopter fire, after an emergency landing on a highway in Amite County Tuesday morning.

According to an official with Custom Air L.L.C., the owner and operator of the aircraft, the pilot noticed a smell.  Mike Fenley, who was the only one on board, immediately looked to land the chopper.

He put the helicopter down in a field near the intersection of Highway 24 and Irene Road. Following the landing the helicopter caught fire, and Fenley made a quick escape and avoided injury.

The Custom Air official praised Fenley's work and commented that he had more than 20 years of flight experience.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety reported that the aircraft was traveling from Monroe, Louisiana. An investigation is underway concerning the source of the smell and why the helicopter went up in flames.
