JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The internationally based company, Lockheed Martin is hosting its fourth annual I.T.Dday at the Jackson Convention Complex. The event is free, fun and geared towards helping the younger generation take an interest in science and technology.
From taking pictures with Sprockit the robot, to experiencing what it takes to work on an aircraft through simulated software, I.T. Day is all about engaging the community with some of the latest technology.
"The world is moving into technology, so it helps to learn what you're moving into," said high school student Susie Portas.
One of the cool, interactive, technological tools you'll find when you come to I.T. Day is an interactive computer wall. By gesturing your hand at the screen, you can scroll through the wall without touching it. The wall is full of information about Lockheed Martin.
Lockheed Martin's Clinton, MS based Mission Support Center opened last fall. Billy Newson, the director for the center told WLBT News, "we have approximately over 50 jobs available today posted we will be interviewing and taking resumes for those."
I.T. Day isn't just about Lockheed Martin though. More than fifty tech based companies are represented to talk to attendees about their job openings and their latest technology.
"It's all free why wouldn't come out," said Sprockit, Lockheed Martin's signature robot.
With jobs related to science, math and technology in high demand, officials from Lockheed Martin said students are the target demographic for the day's event.
"We want to make sure that we do our part in making sure that that part of the population and that part of the workforce is being well developed," said Von Richardson, a Program Director for Lockheed Martin.
Warren Central High School student Shelton Case attended I.T. Day to compete in a science, technology, math and engineering competition with classmates. She says what she's learned has made a big impression.
"It's really informative and it's actually kind of pretty cool, it's kind of opening my perspective up and maybe even future majors in college, maybe future jobs," said Case.
