Jackson State University students, staff members and trustees are pleased to welcome Dr. Carolyn Meyers as the University's 10th president.
Dressed in full academic regalia, faculty from Jackson State and other institutions made note of the energy and expertise the Newport News, Virginia native brings to the campus.
Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson says she's a welcome addition to the state's only urban university.
"Dr. Meyers, we wish you great success as we move Jackson State University forward," he said.
Governor Phil Bryant offered a few light moments.
"I had an inaugural a short time ago. It didn't have all this pomp and circumstance. I like the horns. I gotta get some of those. If you're gonna be Governor, you need those," he said, prompting laughter from the crowd.
And he informed us of Dr. Meyers' value as president of JSU.
"She has increased by tenfold the fundraising to $4.2 million, enrollment is at an all time high, 900 students," he said.
Despite her accomplishments in the year she's been at JSU, Dr. Meyers says she's overwhelmed at the reception she's been given.
"Been here since January 2011. Didn't know a soul," she said, adding that everyone has been warm and inviting. "The legislature has supported us, the city has supported us. The students are just magnificent."
Dr. Meyers says she will concentrate on people, programs, and place.
"We're gonna keep our focus on excellence. That's what the students deserve, simply the best education. No modifiers or excuses," she said.
