Memphis mother arrested after baby tests positive for drugs

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis mother was arrested after she gave birth to a baby who tested positive for cocaine and marijuana.

Shamika Henderson, 29, is due in court Monday morning.  There is no information on where her baby is, but he was born with a high risk of drug withdrawal.

Retired educator Bonnie Broussard lives across the street from Henderson's last known address in the Longview Heights neighborhood.

"Parents need to be very much aware of what they're putting in their systems," said Broussard.  "And they feel like if they're doing drugs now, it's not going to affect them later."

Henderson's newborn baby, known as E.H. in an affidavit of complaint, tested positive for cocaine and marijuana, putting him at "a high risk for withdrawal symptoms."

Hospital staff at Methodist South did the testing after the baby's birth last October, though criminal charges were not filed until this week after DCS submitted an aggravated child abuse report to Memphis police.

A spokesperson with DCS in Nashville said it is protocol when hospitals contact them in cases like this for them to contact police.

This is the second recent case in Memphis of a mother giving birth to a drug addicted baby.  The District Attorney and Shelby County Drug Court are implementing a new program to combat the problem.

"The real goal here is to make sure the mothers get off drugs," said Shelby County District Attorney Amy Weirich.

"Children need to be cared for and nurtured even before they're conceived," said Broussard.

Henderson is being held without bond.  No one answered the door at her last known address Friday.
