Gas prices continue to rise

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The average price for regular gas has jumped to $3.76 per gallon statewide. That's nearly $0.20 per gallon more than one month ago. The higher prices aren't good news, but experts say the cost at the pump could level out soon.

Just over one month ago, regular unleaded gas at the Jackson Exxon station on Old Canton Road was $3.65 per gallon. Now that price is up to $3.79 per gallon.

"It's going to be difficult if the prices don't do down," said driver Debbie Curtis.

Officials from the U.S. Department of Energy said gas prices may actually begin to level out by this summer. The national average for gas is predicted to peak at $3.90 per gallon. Typically Mississippi lags about ten cents behind.

"It is good news, but they can lower it a little bit if they start drilling offshore again," said Rankin County resident Joseph Guidry.

Magee resident Eddie Keys drives more than 100 miles a day to Canton.

"I drive back and forth from Nissan everyday from Magee," Keys told WLBT.

Keys is one of several drivers who filled up at the Mac's gas station on Highway 49 in Richland.

It's one of the least expensive stations in the Jackson metro area.

"I try to fill up every day to keep from running real low, I think that saves a little bit," said Keys.

One simple thing to do to conserve gas and stay safe in the car is to slow down. Every 5 mph that you drive over 60 mph, is like spending an additional $0.24 cents per gallon at the pump.

Keys said, "I try to keep it under 65 so I guess that helps a little bit, also I'm driving a four cylinder vehicle so that helps also."

With their more affordable gas prices, employees at Mac's gas station say someone is typically always filling up.
