JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The wheelchair bound woman struck by an oncoming vehicle Friday has died of her injuries.
The man pushing her was killed at the scene on the I-55 Frontage Road.
The driver is out of jail and so far faces only minor charges.
According to Jackson police, 44 year old Donna Williams died four days after suffering head injuries when the wheelchair she was in was struck by a car in front of Captain D's.
Friday 50 year old Powell Calhoun, the man pushing Williams' wheelchair, was pronounced dead at the scene.
J.P.D. Deputy Chief Brent Winstead said the 2000 Honda Accord was driven by 50 year old Ling Lu of Jackson.
Witnesses said the car was weaving in and out of traffic when it struck the couple.
"I saw the Honda merge into that lane, smacked them I mean full speed, sent both pretty high in the air. I got out and checked on the lady. She was breathing and she had her eyes open, but she was unresponsive. I walked over to the guy, and he had no, nothing," said eyewitness Robert Cummings.
Cummings said he was pulling out of Executive Place and turning right onto the Frontage Road when the tragic incident happened in front of him.
Police said just prior to the fatal crash Lu had left the scene of a fender bender in the parking lot of Big Lots.
Lu told investigators that he then proceeded south on the Frontage Road and got into the right turn lane when he decided to turn around to return to the store.
That's when he said he struck the pedestrians who were in the right turn lane.
"I would see them on a daily basis going up and down the street. She was in a wheel chair, and he was pushing her every day, not bothering anyone," said Arthur Brown who works beside the site of the crash at Joe Usry Auto Group.
Lu was arrested Friday and charged with leaving the scene of an accident, the first one in Big Lots parking lot.
That charge is a misdemeanor.
Winstead said there were no skid marks at the fatal crash scene, and Lu did not appear impaired.
He was not charged.
The Honda driver has no previous record, but authorities are awaiting blood test results.
J.P.D. Officials said Calhoun and Williams had no physical address and stayed at various hotels along I-55.
"Very sad, I mean they were loners. We would see them come through all the time. It's very unfortunate. I think people need to try to drive more carefully here," added Brown.
Jackson police said Lu faces no criminal charges at this time, but the case will be presented to the Hinds County Grand Jury.
