Golf Cart Battery Thieves Sought By Police

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Grove Park employees spent the morning sorting through the recovered batteries, seeing which ones they'd be able to use.

Appears the thieves were careless in their crime, damaging 24, valued at over $16,00.00.

Sometime Thursday morning two thieves broke in their golf cart garage, and took over 70 batteries.

Police recovered the batteries later that afternoon at Cash For Batteries on Terry Road, and returned them to the course.

A surveillance video of the crime is now providing police with good leads.

Sergeant Deric Hearn of the Jackson Police Department says, "We are looking for two suspects they are driving what appears to be a 1992 Chevy pickup truck.  It appears an individual was inside the gate, got it open, pushed it open and the truck you could see the truck drive in and back in and they loaded the batteries up."

The golf cart batteries were traded for over 800 dollars cash. Employees at Cash For Batteries say they didn't know they were stolen.

20 more batteries sold for cash by the thieves were recovered at the Can Man on Valley Street.

City officials say more needs to be done to regulate the sale of metals.  The batteries sought after because of their lead core.

Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson says, "We need to put people on notice that they may think they are receiving just merchandise but when they're receiving stolen merchandise they're actually breaking the law."

Police have identified the suspects, and say they're very close to making an arrest.
