JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Jackson Square Shopping Center is back in business, with a new name. The Jackson Square Promenade celebrated its grand re-opening Friday. Jackson Square had been mostly vacant for about 20 years.

California investor Jessie Wright bought the property in 2012, and has invested more than $2.5-million-dollars into the renovation of the retail spaces. Eighteen of thirty are filled.

Mayor Harvey Johnson was on hand for the festivities that included food and entertainment.

The Mayor says few people realize that South Jackson has seen the largest growth of any part of the city, adding that this is a shining example of that .

Mayor Johnson says all city departments are on board, including the police department, that will provide additional directed patrols as part of their new 10 beat system in precinct 1.

The developer says he has space available for as little as $250-dolalrs a month, and is offering incentives, such as months free rent to new tenants.

The Sheriffs Office has taken a space as well.

A group of 200 or so gathered to dedicate this revitalization project.
