JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The man who made history becoming the first African American to attend Ole Miss continues to reach out and help.

Saturday morning, James Meredith was part of "March Against Fear 2012". A ceremony at the Capitol was afterward. "March Against Fear 2012" is a re-enactment of Meredith's 220-mile walk from Memphis to Jackson back in 1966.

The 2012 walk and rally aims to put an end to what organizers call racism against Latinos.

House Bill 488 would have tightened the state's immigration laws. It died last week. But Meredith says it's not going away, and young people must keep up the fight.

"The young people are beginning this movement. It looks like I've been hearing people complain about the small crowd. I guarantee you, this crowd is America wide," Meredith told participants, amid cheers.

The event also included an appearance by actors in Aztec costume. Aztecs were natives of Central Mexico.
