JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A Terry father has admitted he shot his 26-year-old daughter in the chest in front of his grandchildren a year ago this month.
The 53-year-old Melvin Chandler pleaded guilty to aggravated assault last week.
The Hinds County District Attorney's office said the crime carried a gun enhancement penalty.
The district attorney's office did not make a recommendation, and Chandler made an open plea before Circuit Judge Bill Gowan in Jackson.
Chandler was sentenced to 25 years -- the maximum -- with 20 years to serve and supervised probation for 5 years.
Deputies say Chandler and his daughter, Cassandra Chandler, quarreled about a horse on April 1, 2011, when she was shot.
