Walk a mile in her shoes

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There was an unusual sight at the state capitol today; big burly men wearing high heeled shoes. It was part of a demonstration to show sympathy for women who are victims of sexual assault.

There they were, marching around the capitol in high heeled shoes. It's the fourth year men have put on the shoes and marched.

Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis tried to run in the shoes, but couldn't do it.

"I did it for the cause Bert, to increase the awareness for sexual violence. And to educate people on the important subject" said Sheriff Lewis. "I have a lot of respect for women, and anybody else that puts this kind of shoes on to walk everyday."

Sheriff's department spokesman Captain Joseph Daughtry, a really big man, also put on the shoes.

"To increase the awareness of sexual violence and to educate people" said Daughtry.

Levette Johnson, Executive Director of the Mississippi Coalition Against Sexual Assault, was the organizer of the event and was pleased with the turnout.

"April is sexual awareness month, nationwide" said Johnson. "This is our annual event, this is our fourth year, doing walk around with our shoes. And this is a men's event to bring awareness against sexual assault. All the men from law enforcement, attorneys, some faith leaders, some of our legislators were out here and we have different people from all around the state.>

The organizers estimate 150 people participated.
