JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Tornado season is in full swing, as evidenced by the huge number of twisters that hit Oklahoma over the weekend. Now a new shield of protection for your friends and family is going up in Byram.
City officials are adding seven new tornado warning sirens throughout the most populated areas of the growing city south of Jackson. That will maximize the weather alert system thanks to three Hinds County sirens already in place.
The seven new sirens cost a total of $185,000. In the event of a tornado warning the sirens will be sounded by the Byram Police Department. According to Commander Tim Everett of the Byram Fire Department the system should be ready to test April 27th.
The locations include: Bryam Estates, Silver Creek, Terry Road at Byram Parkway, Executive Boulevard on the eastside of I-55, Lake Dockery, Siwell Road close to the Kroger, and ByramDale subdivision.
