MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two Madison teens are in jail after one fought with an officer for his weapon during their arrest.   It happened in the Reunion subdivision just before 7 this morning.

Two Madison Police officers responded to Haddington Cove, located in the Reunion Subdivision, concerning an apparent auto burglary. While en route to the call for service, the police department received a second call from Haddington Cove concerning a juvenile in a field walking in circles talking to himself.

When the officers arrived, they found two subjects and a foot pursuit ensued. During the apprehension of one of the individuals, a firearm was discovered in the suspect's possession.

Assistant Chief Robert Sanders says, "Whenever he was arresting the suspect the officer was able to get the weapon away from the suspect.  During the process the suspect actually did grab the officers weapon and a struggle ensued over the weapon."

The officer's weapon was discharged during the struggle.

"He never was actually in possession of the officers weapon, they were struggling over the weapon but the officer never did lose control of the weapon," says Assistant Chief Sanders.

No injuries were reported and both suspects, 16 and 17 year old males from Gluckstad, were taken into custody. Their names are not being released at this time.

They are being charged with auto burglary, assault on an officer, resisting arrest and failure to comply.

Clothing and other items believed to have been taken from two burglarized vehicles were found on the teens.  Police believe the gun one teen had may have come from one of those cars.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The 17-Year-Old teen could have his charges upgraded to aggravated assault on an officer, and be charged as an adult.

Police say this is normally a low crime area.
