JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Two families are homeless following a Monday night fire at a Jackson home which put one man in the hospital.  The hospitalized man, who lived on one side of the duplex, was injured while escaping the fire at 2209 St. Charles Street.

The other side of the rental property was occupied by Nikita Sweeney and her two daughters.  They made it out safely and while they lost almost everything Sweeney said they are grateful to be alive.

"I can't believe this happened, but I know God does everything for a reason," Sweeney said. "I'm just happy that me and my kids were able to get out alive."

When firefighters arrived shortly after 9:30 p.m. Monday the house was fully involved with flames and thick smoke pouring from the roof.  Firefighters battled the blaze and had it under control by 2:30 Tuesday morning.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
