Sound Off: JPS search no game

Posted: Updated:

One theme you'll hear from all of us in the media is open government. We believe transparency in government makes for better government. There is a difference between open government and good business practices.

The Jackson Public Schools search for a new superintendent has narrowed to two finalists. Both came to Jackson and presented their case as to why they should be selected. Just watching the two finalists publicly pitch for the job made me uncomfortable. It reminded me more of "Celebrity Apprentice" than hiring the most qualified person for the job.  Why would anyone even place their name in consideration when the person not selected will be considered a loser?

Conducting the search like a game show keeps really qualified candidates from applying. The JPS school board should conduct a thorough search, interview finalists privately and select the best candidate for superintendent.
