JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

At least 53,000 Mississippians are currently living with Alzheimer's disease. If you know someone with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia, WLBT wants to inform you about a free monthly program  called "Art in Mind." The program offers an artistic escape for dementia patients and their caregivers.

"Art in Mind" gives participants an opportunity to express their thoughts and creativity through the arts. Through the program, individuals get to create their own masterpieces. Oil pastels were used on Wednesday to work on pieces focused on light and contrast.

"Many people have never had any exposure to art in terms of actually being in a studio so that's been interesting to see they kind of doubt their own abilities and then once they get into it its really amazing to see the things that they've created," said Elizabeth Williams, the Chief of Engagement and Learning for the Mississippi Museum of Art.

"Art in Mind" takes place at the Mississippi Museum of Art. The program is a collaboration between the museum and the Mississippi Alzheimer's Association.

If you're interested in signing up, all you have to do is fill out some quick paperwork. You can register and learn more at http://www.alz.org/ms/documents/art_reg_form.pdf. Also, for more information on Alzheimer's disease, you can contact the Mississippi Alzheimer's Association at 1-800-272-3900.
