Arrest made in old firestone building fire

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jackson fire investigators investigating an arson. Luicio Martinez was arrested and charged with arson in connection to the old Firestone building fire in downtown Jackson. The vacant building is next to the Jackson Convention Complex on Pascagoula Street.

When crews arrived on the scene just after 8:00 a.m., smoke was spreading from within the building. Jackson Fire Chief R.D. Simpson said a man spotted near the fire is being questioned about the blaze. Chief Simpson also said it smelled like something was burning from within the structure.

"What tends to happen is when a structure is vacant sometimes you have people who occupy that area and they bring things from the inside and everything like that so it compounds the situation," Chief Simpson told WLBT.

No one was injured in the fire. Investigators aren't releasing a motive for the start of the fire.
