JSU student overcomes adversity to earn degree

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Hundreds graduated from Jackson State University on Saturday, but there was one student who has overcome more adversity than most.

Chelsey Gladney lost both of her legs and was severely burned in a 2008 traffic accident.

After missing a year of college, Chelsey recovered and completed her business administration degree.

Saturday afternoon about a hundred friends and family helped her celebrate the accomplishment with a reception.

Chelsey doesn't consider herself an inspiration to others, but admits she had plenty of help and motivation.

"I actually feel really good because most people wouldn't have done it, and I don't think I would have done it but I had my family and my friends. That was the support and the motivation that made me finish," explained the smiling college graduate.

Chelsey says her next goal is to become a certified court reporter and start her own business.
