Doctor accused of hiring two men to kill lawyer

Authorities say a 70-year-old oncologist is accused of hiring two men to kill the lawyer who represented his ex-wife when they divorced in the 1990s.

Dr. Arnold Smith of Greenwood and William Paul Muller, 54, a brickmason from Morgan City, were arrested Sunday and held without bond on a charge of conspiracy to kill attorney Lee Abraham, Greenwood city police told the Greenwood Commonwealth (

Authorities said Keaira Byrd, 23, and Derrick Lacy, 25, entered Abraham's law office Saturday night, but agents from the Mississippi attorney general's office were waiting. A gunfight ensued.

Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders said Byrd died from injuries after being shot in the head and other locations. Lacy was shot in the lower back, Sanders said.

She said one of the agents suffered a less serious wound. The agent's name was not immediately released.

Abraham was not hurt, Mayor Carolyn McAdams said. Last week, Abraham contacted the FBI about an anonymous letter that he said slandered his brother, Leflore County Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham, and his sister, Mississippi Delta Community College official Magdalene Abraham. The letter, which claimed to be created from transcripts of secretly taped conversations, claimed that Sam and Magdalene Abraham, along with Sunflower County Chancery Clerk Paula Sykes, schemed to oust MDCC President Larry Bailey, who retired earlier this month.

The attorney is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the successful prosecution of whoever wrote the letter.
