JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Monday, students at four Jackson area schools will get a chance to experience JPS's first ever farm to school day.
The overall goal of the event is to promote consumption of locally grown foods and help children understand the importance of eating healthy. Farm to school also helps support children's healthy eating habits by increasing the use of fresh fruits, vegetables and other minimally processed local foods in school meals.
Students will get a chance to meet and talk with local farmers.
Fresh, locally grown collard greens and sweet potatoes will be served for lunch that day.
The four schools participating are Dawson elementary, pecan park elementary, GN Smith Elementary, and Rowan Middle School.
Mississippi roadmap to health equity and food corps are partnering with JPS for this first time event.
