Details still sketchy in murder for hire plot

GREENWOOD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The events unfolded Saturday night outside the law office of attorney Lee Abraham, the intended victim. Twenty-three-year-old Keaira Byrd was killed and twenty-five-year-old Derrick Lacy was wounded during a gunfight.

The gunfight happened shortly after 8 PM across the street from the Leflore County Courthouse in downtown Greenwood. An unidentified assistant attorney general was wounded.

The Greenwood Commonwealth newspaper was told Abraham was targeted in a murder for hire scheme for the role he played in representing Dr. Arnold Smith's wife back in the 1990's.

Also charged with conspiracy to commit murder is Smith's friend, Paul Muller, of Morgan City. Reporter Charlie Smith Covered the story for the newspaper.

"Smith is a well known cancer doctor here in Greenwood" said Smith. "He has held a grudge against Abraham for years, more than a decade, and ah he will bring it back on any topic you bring up. He'll bring up Abraham. And you know he is charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Police haven't said what his role in it was, how they know he was involved in the plot. But he is being held in the jail without bond."

Greenwood attorney Hiram Eastland the third knows both Abraham and Dr. Smith.

"Apparently it was a shootout, gunfight type situation, between the two people from the attorney general's office and the two people that were hired to put a hit on Mr. Abraham" said Eastland. "Like I said, thank god that he is ok."

Workmen were hard at work Monday at Abraham's law office, repairing the damage from bullet holes in the wall. Abraham was unavailable for comment on the story.
