JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The Board of Trustees of Jackson Public Schools has voted to enter into contract negotiations with Dr. Cedrick Gray, superintendent of the Fayette County, Tennessee, school system, to serve as the district's next superintendent.

The seven member board made the decision Tuesday during their regular meeting, voting 5 to 2 for Gray.

Dr. Othor Burton and Tim Collins were the two members who did not cast a vote for Dr. Gray.

We are told the board will begin contract negotiations immediately.

Gray's selection caps a more than four month search which included input from parents, community and staff through surveys, town hall meetings, a superintendent search advisory council, and public forums.

Dr. Gray was chosen from a pool of 71 applicants. Dr. Dennis Carpenter, a deputy superintendent from Newton County, Georgia, was the other finalist in the running to head JPS.
