HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Former president Aubrey Lucas will be interim president at the University of Southern Mississippi while the Board of Trustees looks for a permanent successor to Martha Saunders.
Saunders, who became USM's ninth president in 2007, said last month that she was stepping down for personal reasons.
Lucas was the university's sixth president. He held that position for 21 years, and remains a professor of higher education there.
He also was acting president for eight months in 2001 and 2002, after the departure of the seventh president, Horace Fleming.
