JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Jackson Public School board members got an earful from angry and concerned parents Tuesday night.
At the school board meeting at district headquarters, parents wanted to make sure board members heard from them how upset they are over rezoning plans that will move students from Bailey Magnet High School and close Bradley Elementary.
A meeting was also held Tuesday night at Bailey where parents gathered to voice their opposition to the plans and their hope that school board members will re-think their decision.
"I would actually like to see the thing turned over and give these kids a chance to complete their program out and other kids coming behind them to be able to have the same opportunity that my daughter has had," said parent Lula Dunlap.
"Bailey Magnet has reached out to so many kids in so many ways. Bailey Magnet has changed me personally. I used to come to school just thinking school was just something to be played with, but they have changed my mind frame," said Bailey sophomore Ledarius Burks.
"I have programs I'm attending this summer at Tougaloo and Ole Miss because of the opportunities I've had at Bailey. And JPS just doesn't understand how Bailey is a family and you can't tear a family apart. It's just heartbreaking", said Calya Stringfellow, a Bailey junior.
Bailey Magnet will be turned into a middle school. Teachers have been told they will have jobs, but some parents tell us teachers have been given no guarantee of employment.
