PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In 1997, Mike Walter was drafted right out of high school to play for the Jackson Generals, the farm team for the Houston Astros. Then owner, Con Maloney, remembers the San Diego native, who had big hopes of making it to the major leagues.

"They were expecting strong things for him, he had a real strong right arm, he could throw the ball well, they had him picked, down the road, couple three years maybe even being a closer for the Astros. He had that kind of reputation coming into us, we were excited to have him," said Maloney.

Walter wore number 25 as a General, but then hurt his shoulder in his first year. He attempted a comeback in 2008, but re-injured the shoulder. In 1999, he came back, played a full season, but then the team moved to round rock Texas.

"He was a fun guy to have on your team. He was just a good guy you know whether it's a police team or sporting team, those are the kind of people you wanna be around," said Maloney.

In 2000, Walter finished his final year in baseball for the Jackson Senators non-affiliated semi-pro team, going from there into a career in law enforcement.

Outside the Pearl police department, a memorial has been set up near a police car. Well wishers dropping off flowers, stuffed animals and cards.

Miskelly's Furniture has dedicated their digital sign with multiple notes honoring the fallen officer, and different prayer verses.  Throughout the city, the Pearl officer is being remembered by a community mourning the loss of one of their own.
