Jackson City Councilman Chokwe Lumumba plans to run for mayor next year. He's called a news conference for Monday afternoon to announce his candidacy.
Lumumba, an attorney and community activist, says he wants to bring transparency to city government, bring new economic ideas and fix long-standing city service issues.
Lumumba was elected to city council in 2009 as a Democrat.
Current mayor Harvey Johnson, who is serving his third term, hasn't announced whether he'll seek reelection.
