Remote controlled jet air show thrills crowds

RAYMOND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

All eyes were on the skies over Raymond Saturday for a high powered air show, remote control style.

The 21st Annual Mississippi Afterburner Jet Rally was held at the John Bell Williams Airport.

The air show was held in conjunction with the Hinds Community College Aviation Department.

About 80 remote controlled jet pilots from 15 states participated.

While the event is not a competition, it was an opportunity for pilots to test the power of their engines.

They thrilled the crowds flying their model turbine-powered jets at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour.

"They're all turbine powered real jets. They're 1,100 degree heat coming out of the rear. They burn jet fuel just like the big boys spending up to 130,000 rpm," said contest director Vernon Montgomery.

Proceeds from the rally benefit the Hinds Community College Aviation Scholarship Program.
