CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

With the moonlight as a guide and flashlights in hand a trickle of shopping fanatics started the day in the dark at the Canton Flea Market. It's a tradition for Terry Goodwin who traveled to Mississippi from Florida. She arrived to the flea market at 4 a.m.

"I'm waiting for people to peak open their curtains and go peak inside," said Goodwin

This is the first year at the flea market for Reeca Elliott and her friends from Ripley, Mississippi. They're in town for the state high school golf championship and sort of stumbled on the market.Elliott bought some candles and pottery and was so excited about her deals she couldn't recall everything else she purchased.

"I don't know what else I've bought I've spent a lot of money and had a good time," said Elliott.

While shoppers enjoy buying from the assortment of handmade arts and crafts and one of a kind pottery and jewelry, Canton Mayor Dr. William Truly enjoys seeing the small town of Canton pull in an estimated $450,000 from the spring and fall flea markets.

"It is the major event as far as I'm concerned in terms of tourist events in the state of Mississippi," said Truly.

In addition to some really good shopping at the Canton Flea Market there's also really good food. Rockin' Roger's a restaurant in Louisiana specializes in what's called the Cajun Pistol. It's filled with cheese sauce, crab meat and shrimp.

"We basically take the cheese and stuff it into a fried bread roll and wrap it up in a foil wrap that's pretty much it," said Lori Fontenot from Rockin' Roger's.

Canton's fall flea market is scheduled for November.
