JPS holds seminar to encourage summer reading

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

As their children play in the Mississippi Children's Museum, parents and in some cases grandparents are in the Museum annex building getting some schooling of their own. They're learning how to encourage their young ones to tackle their required summer reading.

"Each child is required to read three books. One is a grade level book chosen for them. The other two books they can choose themselves," says Shawna Davie, Director of Education Initiatives at the United Way.

The United Way partnered with Jackson Public Schools and the Museum to put on a summer reading parent orientation Saturday. In addition to learning what is required, the caregivers are learning how to get it done.

"The acting out, helping the kids act out, doing different activities with them during the day to help encourage their reading," parent of three Brittanii Burse told us regarding the techniques she's learned.

Roberta Burrell is a grandmother of three in the Jackson Public Schools. She's getting tips on sparking an interest in reading, but only two of her three grandchildren need the encouragement.

"My middle one, she loves to read. She checks books out of the library all the time," Burrell tells us.

Carolyn Smith brought five children to the Museum while she attends the seminar. Three of the kids are her own, and two are neighbors.

"I think it's really important. As parents it's our duty to get our children engaged in (reading)," Smith says.

The parents who attended received free books that are on the required reading list.

The event is part of the 'One Jackson, Many Readers' program, designed to keep student reading skills sharp over the summer.
