JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A man was shot and killed around two Monday afternoon as he walked along Northside Drive. It happened near Manhattan Road, where Chastain Middle School and the Tisdale Library are located.
Police spokeswoman Colendula Green says a car came up behind the victim, and a passenger got out and opened fire. Green says the victim ran toward the library, where he collapsed in the bushes. He was pronounced dead at a Jackson hospital. His name was not released, but Green said he appeared to be in his early 20s.
Police are now looking for the shooter and the car.
"We're looking for a possibly 1998-model Chevy Cavalier, possibly brown or gold with two black male suspects inside the vehicle," Green told WLBT News.
No one was injured inside the school or the library, but library officials were concerned.
"It's a wake-up call for all of us, for all the leaders here in Jackson," said Charlotte Moman, assistant director for public service with the Jackson-Hinds Library System. "They have to do something about crime, especially when it involves our young people."
Chastain was placed on lockdown until police cleared the scene.
