Motorists wary of unmarked law enforcement vehicles

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There are concerns that someone may be posing as a police officer in north Mississippi. Two people have been killed in different counties, shot inside their vehicles. Now some motorists are left wondering what to do in the event someone in an unmarked car tries to pull them over.

There is fear among some motorists. That's because two people were shot to death in the middle of the night. May 8, a 74-year-old grandfather from Nebraska was found in his car alongside I-55 in Panola County.

Two days later, a Hernando clerk was found in her car near an exit to I-55 in Tunica County. A friend of hers told our sister station, WMC News, "She's very friendly. She was willing to help anybody. But she mostly stayed to herself because she worked at night."

There is also fear of blue lights on unmarked police vehicles. Investigators believe both murders are related, even though they happened 55 miles apart. Investigators say a possible suspect car is a light colored Crown Victoria. There were no witnesses but tips are flowing in to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. There are distinct similarities between the two incidents, according to the Highway Patrol.

And now this alert, if anyone is concerned and it is not obvious that a law enforcement officer is trying to stop you, call 9-1-1 or *47.

A reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.  Anyone who has any information may call 1-888-8CRIMES, that's 1-888-827-4637. Investigators do not want your name, just your information.
