I-20 in Brandon back open

Posted: Updated:
BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A stretch of Interstate 20 eastbound in Brandon was re-opened at 7:50 a.m., Wednesday, after being shutdown for nearly 15 hours. Clean up efforts continued Wednesday morning as the right lane of I-20 at exit 56 had to be shutdown following an 18-wheeler accident Tuesday afternoon.

The alert was issued around 7:00p.m. Tuesday, when hours before tractor trailer broke into pieces when it ran off the roadway.

The truck was headed west when it veered into the median, across the eastbound lanes, and down an embankment at the downtown Brandon exit. The rig landed on its side, and all its cargo was thrown out across the grassy shoulder.

The driver was not seriously injured. There's still no word on what caused the truck to veer off the highway.

One lane of westbound traffic and the exit ramp have been closed since before 5 p.m. Motorists should avoid the area and seek alternate routes if possible.
