JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
After a Jackson resident passed away two years ago, no one was left to care for her property. Over time, it became run down, and eventually an eyesore for the neighbors she left behind.
The property at 1104 Violet street is in great disarray. It has now become a dumping ground for old furniture, appliances and fast food bags. Neighbor David Terrell says the overgrown trashy lot is an eyesore and its bringing down his property value.
What's left of the house is barely standing. The front yard now a dumping ground for old furniture, appliances, and whatever fast food was consumed in the area,,,and that's not all say neighbors.
"They already broke in the house stole the iron and stuff then before it got so bad they were going in there smoking crack," says Terrell.
According to city officials this is truly a case of an absent landlord. In fact the homeowner, Laura McNair died in 2010. The Jackson Community Improvement Division opened up a case on the home in March, a notice for immediate cleanup will be sent to the home, which probably won't do any good because there's nobody there. After that the city could decide to clean up the property and put a tax lien on the property, which nobody owns at this point.
Terrell says, "They need to find out who owns the property, get them to take care of it, if not they should take it over and tear it down."
City officials say they approach dilapidated properties of deceased owners the same as they do the living, but they usually take longer to resolve usually due to the slow transfer of properties to new owners.
Residents just hope to get this mess cleaned up, during their lifetime.
