Governor Phil Bryant traded in his suit and tie for a leather vest and helmet Friday morning and took a motorcycle ride along with some other bikers. all of the are revving up with a purpose.
"It is just something for us to say thank you and we don't get enough opportunities to be able to do that," said Bryant.
That thank you is for people like Tommy Norris, Jim Taylor and Gary Wetzel, all of whom are medal of honor recipients. The men along with many other veterans will be on hand for Mississippi's Trail of Honor which gives a glimpse, with reenactments, of U.S. wars dating back to the French and Indian war.
"It's just an incredible opportunity to follow this country's history in the conflicts we've had in order to keep us free," said Norris.
That freedom comes with a price tag and the names of those who've died helping to ensure it continues to grow.
"We need to be ever mindful that we have men and women in harms way," said Bryant.
The trail, open through the weekend is set up behind Harley Davidson in Jackson and is expected to bring in 35,000 people to the capitol city. Through telling their stories and putting faces to the tales of war, veterans say a deeper understanding and appreciation comes with just walk.
"It shows the young people, it shows the old people, as you walk through it, the sacrifices men and women have given us to be here today," said Wetzel.
The trail will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and will also include the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall.
