Reservoir packed for Dragon Boat Regatta

MADISON COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It was a thrilling day on the waters of the reservoir Saturday as teams paddle to the finish during this year's Dragon Boat Regatta.

The reservoir shoreline was filled with people taking in the race.

47 teams and about 1,200 participants competed for bragging rights.

Teams from local hospitals, corporations and individual groups took part in the three heat races.

It was free to the public with a kids village and lots of food, music and fun.

"It's an opportunity for troopers throughout the state to come here and fellowship and have a good time. We bring our families out here. We bring members from the department and just made it a whole department event," said Lt. Col. Mike Holmes of the Mississippi Highway Patrol, a regatta participant.

"It is ultimately a team building sport. So you've got teams out here, they were supposed to be teams of 20 with a drummer and four alternates, but we had to lighten the boats a little bit. We got some choppy waters we're dealing with today," said Kasey Perry with the Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

This is the fourth year the regatta has been held.
