The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project will host a free seminar called "Expungements 101." An expungement legally destroys, obliterates or strikes out records or information in files, computers and other depositories relating to criminal charges.
The expungement seminar will take place at the Hinds Community College Jackson Campus located at 3925 Sunset Drive starting at 4pm.
"Generally folks that have misdemeanor convictions and are first offenders can have their records expunged particularly if they've met the requirements of their sentencing, if they paid their fines and attended any classes that may have been required by the court" said Tiffany Graves, an attorney with the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project. "Mississippi statues do allow for some expungements related to felony convictions though there are few."
Former Hinds County District Attorney Faye Peterson will lead the seminar. Lawyers will also be on hand to meet one-on-one with participants. Call the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project at 601-960-9577 for more information.
