LGBT group petitions Ag Museum

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A group from the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community hand delivered a petition to get officials at the Ag Museum to allow same-sex civil union ceremonies.

About a dozen LGBT members demonstrated at the facility to draw attention to the petition on which organizer Clay Curry claims to have 1300 signatures.

"Let's give our people hope for a better tomorrow from Corinth in the north to my hometown of Greenville and all the way down to Biloxi. We have to call on all members of the LGBT community and its allies to join us and show that we're not second class citizens in the state which we call home," said Curry.

Earlier this year, Kevin Garrard tried to schedule a commitment ceremony with his male partner at the facility on Lakeland Drive in Jackson.

Garrard says he was told they couldn't have the ceremony there because it represents a union.

State law says a union is only between a man and a woman.
