JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Some homeowners in northeast Jackson say their homes have been repeatedly burglarized.
These residents live in the 200 block of Southbrook Drive, just east of Old Canton Road, off Melrose Drive.
You wouldn't think there would be a crime problem in the neighborhood, just riding through it. But we have four people who have complained to 3 On Your Side about at least 12 house burglaries here recently.
The first person to call us was Lottie Adams, who lives with her 89-year-old mother at 232 Southbrook Drive. She surprised us with what she was told by police.
"They suggested two things. Number one, to call the mayor's action line, and gave me the phone number, and then they suggested that I call 3 On Your Side but they didn't have that phone number, so I looked it up," said Adams. "It's a shame when your 80-year-old mother can't go out and do weeds, without locking the door in the back yards."
Her elderly mother, Pat Bell, likes to go into her large back yard and pick weeds. Somebody knows she does that for long periods, without paying attention to anything else, and goes in the house to steal her money while she is tending to the weeds.
"Three times. Three times it's happened," said Bell.
I asked if they stole money.
Bell replied, "And cleaned out my wallet. They didn't take change, but they like that green stuff."
Another neighbor is aware of the burglaries and says she knows who is doing it, but won't tell us.
"Since some young men moved into this area, they have been breaking in mostly on older people, which is wrong," said Alice Mayes, a resident of the neighborhood.
The Jackson Police Department tells WLBT they are still investigating the house burglaries on Southbrook Drive.
