A major road construction project in Rankin County is more than half way complete. The Airport Road bypass construction will make your rush hour commute smoother and travel to the Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport faster.
If you've ever made a trip to the airport, you're familiar with the Old Brandon Road and Airport Road intersection. There's a roundabout there that can get pretty backed up during peak hours. An on-going construction project nearby will reduce some of the congestion.
"The purpose of this project is to basically provide a four lane divided highway from I-20 all the way to Lakeland Drive or Highway 25," said Brian Ratliff, an MDOT Project Engineer.
Airport Road will be widened into the four-lane highway. Four, 25-foot columns are the start of bridges for north and southbound traffic. The bridges will go over Old Brandon Road connecting Airport Road to Highway 80 and I-20. The end result is drivers can bypass the round-about in front of the airport.
"It's a single-lane roundabout and adding additional lanes here to get a four lane section all the way from I-20 to Mississippi 25 or Lakeland will greatly improve the traffic in this area," said Ratliff.
Once construction is complete, the roundabout will remain, but 80% of the traffic going through it will be eliminated. That's good news for travelers catching a plane.
"People can go through the roundabout and not have as much traffic to deal with and be sure they're on time for their flights," said Ratliff.
The smoother travel is expected later this year. "We're hoping to be through with this project by October of this year," said Ratliff.
An access ramp to the airport will also be constructed from the new Airport Road.
