JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
For 13 years Herman Tarrio has constantly looked for traffic violations on Jackson streets.
"I step it up a notch 12 months out of the year. I click it or ticket from January to December," says Tarrio
J.P.D. has some seatbelt and D.U.I. check points but will increase them this holiday weekend. About 70 J.P.D. officers will work the city-wide check points.
Last year nine people died on state highways during the Memorial Day holiday.
Tarrio says speeding and seat belt violations are the most common in the city.
"I train myself for different scenarios, different cars."
Tarrio does a traffic detail, across the city.
On Thursday afternoon ride along, he wrote multiple tickets. Some for lack of insurance or no license.
One of officer's big concerns is children that aren't buckled up properly.
"It takes just three minutes at the most to buckle a child down. So, there is no excuse for not wearing your seatbelt or for a child not being properly restrained, especially a child not being restrained. Kids are not responsible for themselves. The adults are responsible for the kids," says Tarrio.
It's a concern he takes personally.
"I had a serious accident and the only thing that saved me from going through the windshield or being seriously injured was my seatbelt."
Tarrio says some traffic stops can lead to arrests for drugs or if the driver is wanted by police.
The holiday travel period ends midnight Monday.
