WeatherVision moving, becomes part of JSU's meteorology school

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A familiar sight along Interstate 55 in Jackson is in the process of moving. WeatherVision has been uplinking weathercasts to stations around the country since 1991. It's currently located on Foley Street, which is between Fortification and High streets, and is moving to the Mississippi e-Center at Jackson State University on Raymond Road.

Edward St. Pe' says they can't move the satellite uplink dish because it's too big, but the rest of his WeatherVision operation is moving to Jackson State. St. Pe' says his weather service will become a part of the university's meteorology school and train students to not only learn about weather, but to be able to do it on television.

"So, students that want to learn meteorology and major in it will also learn the TV side of it, where when they get out of that curriculum and that program, they will have a demo tape and they can try to get a job in TV."

St. Pe' first learned to do the weather at WLBT back in the early 80's. He has also worked in Shreveport and Baton Rouge, before returning to Jackson.

"Mississippi State has a great program of broadcast meteorology. It's renowned around the country. And I went to Jackson State in 1981, when you put me on the air as a TV weather person," said St. Pe'. "I took classes, I have been aware of that program all along, when we join up with that meteorology program, I mean now, there will be a meteorology broadcast program in Jackson."

This is all kind of nostalgic for me.  The control room for the old WJXN has been here since 1947.  I worked here in 1959 and now it's going away.
