RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Friday morning the 17th annual Memorial Day celebration was held at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland.

The grounds are blanketed in red, white and blue this week as American flags dot the landscape where many fallen soldiers are laid to rest.

Wreaths were placed in front of symbolic crosses by retired veterans. Veterans and enlisted soldiers and their families were on hand to pay tribute to the fallen heroes.

C. Derrington says,"We have the greatest nation on the face of the earth, the greatest nation that's ever been created and we as individuals need to feel our individual responsibility to see that this great nation is ongoing. Definitely."

Derrington a World War II Veteran, was taken prisoner by German troops during the Battle Of The Bulge.  He was later freed by American troops.

Derrington and his wife attended the program which included patriotic songs, prayers and inspirational speeches.

Some also shared stories of why they served their country, and continue to honor those in the military.
