JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

This week Governor Phil Bryant signed a bill into law, while opening up about his own struggles with a learning disorder as a child. The bill requires kindergartners and 1st graders to be tested for Dyslexia.

It was not just another piece of legislation, it had deeply personal meaning for the Governor.

As an elementary student he had trouble with letters, reading and writing. He failed the 3rd grade. But his Marshall elementary teacher had patience.

It was later discovered the Governor was Dyslexic. And it was troubling.

"They are not often recognized as having that difficulty" Bryant said. "They fall behind. I repeated the 3rd grade. What a difficult, horrible experience that was for a young child."

Governor Bryant believes this bill will help other children by having them tested, giving them the opportunity to know they can learn and be successful and not give up.

Bryant did just that earning three college degrees.
