MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Boats on the Ross Barnett Reservoir are carrying some happy passengers this Memorial Day weekend.

Andy Young drove down from the small north Mississippi town of Sturgis.

"It's our first year for boating. We've kind of gotten into it, me and my daughter, and being a holiday weekend we were looking for a spot where we could spend some time on a large lake," said Young.

This is the first weekend many folks have been able to get on the water.

Young and his family are camping at the Reservoir. He says being able to dock for lunch is a unique experience.

"We were on the lake tubing and knee boarding and what not, and you just pull up to the dock. Of course, you want to make yourself presentable before you go in but the convenience and just the novelty of it is awesome."

A holiday weekend, along with great weather, means a lot of customers for restaurants on the water.

Alice Brown has worked at Cock of the Walk for its entire 32 years in business.

She says holiday weekends bring nearly double the number of diners as a normal weekend.

Brown said, "That is what keeps us in business, especially during the winter time, the winter months, because it gets kind of slow but our summer months, Christmas, and Thanksgiving when family come in from out of town. We get good business."

Meanwhile, Young and his family are meeting new friends.

"If you go to a campground, come to a lake, these folks are just like you. They are out here for the same thing. They're out here to have some recreation, some fun, to relax. You can walk up to any stranger and start talking to them, you'd be amazed at how much you have in common with them," said Young.
