BRANDON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
A capacity crowd filed into the Brandon Courthouse Monday for Memorial Day ceremonies, in an effort to beat the searing heat.
The crowd soon moved outside for the dedication of a new monument with a wreath laying ceremony.
There was a 21-gun salute, followed by taps in honor of the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
"The important thing is all over America today and all this weekend people are remembering those that have fallen and that's what makes America great. We will not forget," said Governor Phil Bryant.
"It was very moving to see the families that were here, those that have lost those loved ones in battle. And so it's been a very moving day for us in Rankin County," said Congressman Gregg Harper.
