JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Three month old Bishop Collins, III died one year ago today from a heat stroke in Clarksdale. Now, every chance he gets, a Jackson grandfather warns others about this tragic and preventable death. It continues to take an emotional toll.
"It is hard, even preparing for this interview last night was just really difficult, but we get through it and if it can help save one life, all of the emotional issues are well worth it," said Norman Collins, Senior.
The infant was left unattended in the family car as his parents rushed to worship service.
"He was accidentally left in the car. 'Just a miscommunication?' There was a miscommunication. My son asked someone to get him out of the car for him while he retrieved his instruments from the vehicle and that person he asked did not hear him and all of them thought the child was in the nursery and unfortunately he remained in the vehicle for 2 1/2 hours in 93 degree weather," said Collins.
Collins says temperatures in the vehicle reached 150 degrees during that period.
"On a hot day a child's body can heat up 305 times faster than an adults body."
The Collins family hopes by telling Bishop's story, it will help save other children's lives.
