PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Law enforcement agents from across the metro are getting a course on staying one step ahead of a growing prescription drug problem.
Hosted by the Mississippi Board of Medical Licensure, the workshop in Pearl is designed to give agents a better understanding of what's happening in the world of prescription drugs.
The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators is working with the board. The state chapter's president, Thomas Washington says legal drugs are just as much of a battle for law enforcement as illegal ones and the problem is getting bigger.
From doctor shopping to forged prescriptions, agents are learning how to better handle cases and crack down on those misusing the system.
"These guys are good with the illegal drugs but now you're talking about something that is lawful, legal and in everybody's home, but they are being abused and some are being diverted for sales," said Washington.
A larger workshop is also slated for September to include agents from across the state.
