COPIAH COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
It was all about the senior members of the community in Copiah County. Hundreds turned out at Camp Wesley Pines near Gallman Wednesday for a special event devoted to the well-being of senior citizens.
This is the third year they have had a gathering like this in Copiah County. More than 400 senior citizens came to participate. They got wellness checks and were entertained with live music.
It's called, "Seniors and Law Enforcement Together." But the big hit was the weather radio giveaway where the sheriff called out numbers from tickets given to everybody when they came through the door.
"It's put on by the Council on Aging. Wayne Parker, who was a highway patrolman with me, when we both retired, he went to the Council on Aging and I became the sheriff down here," said Copiah County Sheriff Howard Jones. "And Wayne has the ability to get grant money and do things like this, all over the state of Mississippi."
Later the sheriff presented a weather radio to a World War II veteran, 96-year-old Bob Cross of Dentville.
It is important for any citizen of Mississippi to receive a weather radio because this state has the highest tornado death rate in the country and Smith County, Mississippi has more tornado strikes than any other county in a year.
